- Unfortunately, your problems are -still- indicative of phone line
- problems.... if not yours, then possibly the phone lines at your
- internet provider. Check with other subscribers to see what kind of
- experiences -thay- are having.
-
- Also, just because the phone company has been out to check the lines,
- remember that their responsibility -ends- at the junction box outside
- your residence. It is quite likely that the problem is inside your
- house.
-
- Go throughout the house and disconnect **everything** that is now
- connected to your phone line.. extension phones, cordless phones,
- burglar alarms, autodialers, caller-id boxes, line in-use indicators,
- EVERYTHING! If your phone line connects to a lightning-spike protector
- in the back of your power-director/master switch, disconnect that too.
- We want to end up with only the modem connected. If your utility company
- has an attachment to remotely read your utility meters then disconnect
- that too. If this clears things up then go back through the house
- plugging things back in one-by-one until the "culprit" is found.
-
- If the telephone wiring in your house is a rat's nest or you've added
- some extra outlets yourself, consider hiring a professional to come in
- and replace your haywired additions. Phone wiring should cross power
- wires in the walls at right angles and should never be run parallel to
- them or in the same hole or raceway. Any parallel runs in walls should
- have 12 inches or more separation. Any light/fan dimmer switches in
- use? Shut 'em off.
-
- The garbage characters you were seeing before enabling your error
- control was evidence of some phone line disturbance. The sluggishness in
- response now that your e/c is on is indicative that the disturbance is
- still there and your modem throughput and responsiveness is suffering
- while the error-control protocol attempts to provide error-free
- throughput. Your getting dropped/disconnected is likely due to the
- error control protocol simply giving up, which it will do after it tries
- to retransmit the same data 12 times in succession.
-
- Still I've got a hunch this problem is right under your nose.
